MEMORY GROVE CLEANUP ON NOVEMBER 3 A BIG SUCCESS

By Mary Lassalle

Members of Lambda Hiking Club recently volunteered to service the Freedom Trail, which the club adopted as part of Memory Grove Foundation's Adopt-A-Monument Project. This service trip was the first one scheduled as part of the Adopt-A-Monument Project!

Seven volunteers from Lambda Hiking Club serviced the Freedom Trail: Dick Waite, Sy Felt, Randy Burks, Ron Steckler, and others. These volunteers were able to prepare the upper portion of this trail for winter in less than 2-1/2 hours.

RANDY BURKS, President of LHC stated that on the day of the service trip: "The autumnal colors were beautiful, the air was rather warm, and our spirits were high. As some of us went hunting for boulders and rocks to line the path, others took wheel barrels and hauled mulch to help dress the trail. [Mulch is used to prevent moisture evaporation, to protect roots from freezing and to retard the growth of weeds.] Volunteers worked together to move a few hefty logs which were also used to line the trail."

JANE ERICKSON, Co-Chair Memory Grove Foundation expressed her appreciation for the dedicated service of the Freedom Trail by LHC and said the volunteers did a "spectacular job." Jane was quite impressed by the efficiency and unity of the volunteers who worked together to complete the scheduled tasks and was amazed how quickly the volunteers were able to line the trail with some VERY large rocks and HEAVY logs. When the volunteers finished the servicing of the Freedom Trail, Jane took everyone on a short tour of other areas and monuments of Memory Grove.
