Island in the Sky

Car Camping Trip

The summer hiking season came to a close with the club’s traditional fall car camp. This year, 15 campers (including Craig, who flew out all the way from Boston to join us!) met in the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park for a three-day weekend of sunshine, exercise, good food, and good company.

  Thanks Craig!

There were many opportunities for hikes and sight-seeing. Breathtaking views and spectacular cliffs appeared everywhere.  Saturday’s outing to view Upheaval Dome turned into a grueling 12 mile round trip expedition in unseasonably hot weather to view what Mark termed the FUBAR rocks in the center of the formation! :-)
Saturday evening’s potluck dinner featured the usual abundance and variety of delicious food. Club president Randy had lovingly prepared and presented awards and gifts for everyone on the trip. Many were fun; some were serious. In the photo James is receiving an award for saving Randy’s life during the Great Basin car camping trip by performing the Heimlich maneuver.

All in all, the trip was a fitting end to another summer season of great activities.

See all the Island in the Sky pics here.
