SPRING CAR CAMP: ZION NATIONAL PARK

Zion, Utah's most popular National Park, offers astoundingly beautiful landscapes and temperatures that are often warmer than those of Salt Lake. Join us for our first car camp of the season on Friday March 23 thru Sunday March 25.

This will be primitive car camping (pit toilets, no potable water, but no fees) at a BLM area along Kolob Terrace Road just outside the park. In addition to the usual car camping equipment, bring TP and water. Be prepared for wet and/or cold. Also, Saturday dinner will be potluck, so bring a dish to share.

Call Randy at 532-8447 to register for the trip and to obtain a packet of detailed instructions that includes directions to the campground.

SPF AND YOU!

By Sy Felt

A dark suntan makes you look great and when you know you look great you feel great. Sunlight also stimulates the skin to make vitamin D, which helps maintain bone strength, and may possibly cut the risk of arthritis and even cancer. There is a price you may pay for looking so sensuous during your younger years. Excessive sunlight will most likely cause premature aging of your skin with wrinkles and a leathery dark look. Another very important problem is increased chance of skin cancer.

I suggest a compromise so you can go to the grave with young, supple, beautiful skin. (Well, at least better than what will result with too much sunlight!)

Thus, SPF - sun protection factor. A 15 SPF means you should be able to stay out in the sun 15 times longer compared to no lotion. Be aware that one study has suggested that sunscreen use may increase the risk of melanoma (the deadliest type of skin cancer) perhaps by creating a false sense of security about prolonged sun exposure.

People typically apply sunscreen far too thinly or unevenly, so you may be getting only a fraction of the SPF rating - often only 1/4 to 1/2.

Effective in 2002, the FDA will ban labels that claim waterproof, all day protection, and sun block. For good protection, look for the least expensive sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more that also screens UVA and UVB. Reapply after sweating or being in the water.

PROTECT YOUR EYES, TOO! UVB contributes to the development of cataracts. Look for sunglasses labeled as meeting ANSI standards of blocking at least 95% of UVB and 60% of UVA.

SALT LAKE MENS CHOIR SPRING CONCERT

The critically acclaimed Salt Lake Mens Choir (Utah's other choir!) will be performing a concert of choir favorites on Sunday, March 11 at 7:00 pm at All Saints Episcopal Church on 1700 South and Foothill Drive. Tickets are $10 and $15, and are available from David (583-7064) or at the door.
