Boulder Lake Environmental Learning Center Offers Free Hikes, Tree Identification Events – Duluth News Tribune

Identification of winter trees: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 19, Boulder Lake Environmental Learning Center, 7328 Boulder Dam Road, Duluth. Join Boulder Lake staff for a hike to learn how to identify some regional trees in winter. Will bring back samples to investigate. Family event. Free, but donation suggested. Winter Natural History Snowshoe Hike: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 20, Boulder Lake Environmental Learning Center, 7328 Boulder Dam Road, Duluth. Join Boulder Lake staff for a hike as they explore the natural history of the area. May need snowshoes; to rent snowshoes, arrive by 10:30 a.m. The hike will begin at the Wolfski Welcome Center. 23rd Annual Outdoor Gear/Fundraiser Exchange: 9:30 a.m. to noon on March 26, at the back of the Malosky stadium; follow the signs. Hosted by the University of Minnesota Duluth Outdoor Educators Club; 15% of the sale price goes to the promotion of outdoor education. Material drop-off times: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on March 25 and 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on March 26.

Maple syrup: from trees to pancakes: 5-7 p.m. March 28, Bagley Nature Area Classroom, University of Minnesota Duluth. Learn the history of syruping and how sap is collected and turned into maple syrup. Participants will tap maple trees, collect sap and taste it. Cost $3 for UMD student members, $7 for others. Falcons Live! : 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 23, Tettegouche State Park, 5 miles northeast of Silver Bay on State Highway 61. Join Peregrine Falcon Researcher Jackie Fallon and her live birds for an up-close look at a falcon peregrine and other falcon species. Learn about the recovery program that brought these predators back from the brink of extinction. This program will be canceled in case of bad weather. Diamond Willow Trekking Poles: 5-8 p.m. April 28, Bagley Nature Area Classroom, University of Minnesota Duluth. Participants will learn what to look for to find a willow stick that will have a diamond pattern. Everyone will be able to harvest one or more for themselves, then bring it back to the work area and begin the peeling, shaping and carving process. You must bring your own knife or utility knife.
