As a reminder, Troopers urges motorists to keep these safe driving tips in mind when traveling on interstate highway systems:
Stop only on the shoulder of interstate highways in an emergency, such as a mechanical breakdown or in the event of a medical emergency. Louisiana law states that if you encounter a vehicle on the shoulder using emergency lights or hazard warning lights, you must move into the farthest lane possible. If you cannot move, reduce your speed to a reasonable speed until you pass the stopped vehicle.
Refrain from traveling through the median, as well as entering emergency crossings that are designated for authorized vehicles. Louisiana law states that only authorized emergency personnel are permitted to cross the median of an interstate highway system.
Also, avoid walking or standing on interstate highways. Louisiana law states that no pedestrian should cross an interstate highway system except in an emergency.
If you encounter an emergency while traveling on a highway in Louisiana that requires assistance, you can dial *577 (*LSP). This number will connect you to the troop headquarters in your area.
