Karnataka Cabinet Clears Ordinance on SC and ST Reservation

Bangalore, October 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) Karnataka’s cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, decided on Thursday to issue an order to increase reservations for Scheduled Castes (SC) by 2% and for Scheduled Tribes (ST) by 4%.

“Today, my cabinet made a historic decision to approve the order to increase the reserve for my brothers and sisters in the SC/ST community from 15% to 17% and from 3% to 7%, respectively. This historic decision will bring light and shine into their lives and uplift them by providing them with adequate opportunities in education and employment, Bommai said.

Briefing the media after the cabinet meeting, the State’s Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, JC Madhuswamy, said the reservation file would be submitted to Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot for approval.

No less than 103 communities classified as SC and 56 communities among the ST would benefit from the increase in reservations.

Madhuswamy believed that the courts would rule in favor of the government in the event of a legal challenge to the cabinet’s decision. The decision to increase the reservation for SC/STs by the state government will mean that the reservation will cross the Supreme Court’s 50% limit and hit 56% in Karnataka.

The BJP government of Karnataka decided to increase the quota based on a report prepared by a committee headed by retired High Court Justice HN Nagmohan Das.
