A GIRL has died after falling more than 100 feet while hiking on a popular trail.
The 10-year-old was visiting the Garden of the Gods Trail in the Shawnee National Forest with her family on Friday afternoon.
Jackson County Coroner Dr. Tom Kupferer said the girl fell about 100 feet during the hike.
She was airlifted to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
The girl was identified by local media as Everly Montgomery of Odon, Indiana.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of our primary school teacher, Mrs Montgomery, whose daughter Everly died following a tragic accident on Friday,” read a statement from North Daviess Community Schools.
“Everly was a new fourth grader at ND Elementary.
“Please continue to pray for the comfort and peace of his entire family.”
An obituary for Everly describes her as a member of the Odon Christian Church, which was also on volleyball and softball teams, a cross-country club, and Girls Who Code.
“The family loved going to their sporting events together. When she wasn’t working out, Everly loved to cycle to the local library.
“She was a bright, curious young girl and an avid reader. Her smile and enthusiasm could brighten anyone’s day.
She is survived by her parents, a brother and her grandparents.
The funeral must take place at the Christian church of Odon.
