World Running Day 2022: Running just five to ten minutes a day at a moderate pace can help lower your risk of death from heart attack, stroke and other common illnesses

WORLD RACE DAY 2022: The first Wednesday in June is celebrated as Global Running Day by the New York Road Runners (NYRR). This year, the day will be celebrated on June 1. The day will be punctuated with events and programs highlighting the benefits and importance of running for our health. NYRR is also hosting a free virtual Global Running Day that people around the world can participate in by running or walking 3.1 miles between May 28 and June 5. The event aims to promote participation in a “day that encourages everyone to stay active and healthy”.

Health benefits of running

According to a study published in the journal Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases in 2017, running just five to ten minutes a day at a moderate pace can help lower your risk of death from heart attack, stroke and other common illnesses. Running can also help you get a better sleep pattern. Running is also said to reduce the risk of developing cancer and developing neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Global Running Day: Importance

This year’s World Running Day events focus on the challenges facing people and communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. A statement released by the organizers read: “Over the past two years, many people have turned to running as a solution to help release anxiety, gain perspective, cope with cabin fever and maintaining well-being.” To participate in the event you can visit globalrunningday.org and register their commitment.

Operational safety

As you run to mark this global event, it’s important to only run when and where it’s safe for you and your local community. According to globalrunningday.org, there are certain rules you should follow when running:

  1. Stay in populated, well-lit areas. This is especially important if you are running before sunrise or after sunset. Stay on well-lit sidewalks, streets, or roads and pathways with lots of foot traffic.
  2. Do not wear headphones or earbuds while running. Listening to music or talking can distract you from potential dangers and make you a target of theft or accident.
  3. If you run on the roads, run in the opposite direction. This will allow cars to see you and you to see them. In parks, you should run in the recreation lanes furthest from traffic.
