San Antonio named one of the best cities for hiking in the United States

San Antonio was recently named one of the best cities for hiking in the United States for 2022, according to a ranking by LawnStarter. According to the list, the city of Alamo was ranked 36th out of 200 cities.

LawnStarter, an online marketplace for consumers and lawn care experts, ranked the 200 largest U.S. cities from best (#1) to worst (#200) for hiking based on their overall scores (out of 100 possible points), averaged over all of the weighted measures listed below.

Parameters included the number of hike accesses, quality, supplies, climate and safety. San Antonio’s overall score was 52.06. In the standings, Portland, Oregon placed first, while Tuscan took second place.


In Texas, El Paso was the first city to rank 18th in the rankings. Austin followed with 30th place. Garland (#43) had the highest average for consumer ratings of their hiking trails. Although ranked low, Midland (#184) tops the list of cities with the lowest natural disaster risk.

The City of San Antonio attempted to improve its overall Park Score Index, which measures park systems in 100 of the largest cities in the United States. In 2022, the city announced the percentage of San Antonio residents within a 10-minute walk of a park. has risen steadily over the past three years, from 42% in 2019 to 52% in 2022, according to a recent index from the Trust for Public Land.
